In this post, I’d like to address a comment that some users have expressed: adding the decimal place to the “Enter bill” screen. After considering this feature for a little bit, I’ve decided that this will never happen. It will make the UX too complicated and it doesn’t really add anything of significance to the total bill. My analysis is that the error in the total bill will probably not be much more than 60 cents. For example, let’s assume the bill is $32.50. You may enter $32 or $33 but you’ll be either short or over by 50 cents. If the tip comes out to 20%, then the 20% on the missing 50 cents is 10 cents. Therefore, if you only entered $32, then you’re short 60 cents whereas if you entered $33, then you’re over by 40 cents. At any rate, being short less than a dollar shouldn’t really be a big deal. I believe if you’ve received at least good service, then round up. Otherwise, perhaps round down, but this is just my opinion; don’t take it for fact. I would love to hear your thoughts about this in the comments below.
